What to Expect in Your Very First Aikido Class
Your first aikido class might feel intimidating, you might picture flying through the air or intense sparring on day one. We want to put your mind at ease. At our dojo, your first aikido class is all about introduction, safety, and comfort.
Here is exactly what you can expect when you step onto the mat for the first time.
What to Wear
You do not need a traditional uniform (a gi) to get started. For your first few classes, comfortable athletic clothing is perfect. We recommend a clean t-shirt and sweatpants or track pants. Avoid shorts, and make sure your clothing doesn’t have sharp zippers or buttons that could scratch the mats. We practice barefoot, so you can leave your socks and shoes at the door.
Basic Dojo Etiquette
Martial arts traditions are built on mutual respect, but we do not expect you to know everything on day one. When you arrive, an instructor or senior student will greet you and show you where to go. The most basic rule of etiquette is simple: we bow slightly when entering and leaving the mat area. This is just our traditional way of showing respect for the training space and each other.
What You Will Actually Do in Your First Aikido Class
We promise that no one is going to throw you across the room. Your first class is focused entirely on the basics. You will start with a gentle warm-up to get your body moving. After that, Sensei will demonstrate a few techniques to explain some of our common concepts. You will then get to learn one or two of our starter techniques. Sensei likes to make sure every new person leaves with at least something practical they can take with them. You will work slowly and cooperatively with a partner to learn the mechanics without any pressure.
Your Pace, Your Comfort
Everyone on the mat was a beginner once, and we remember exactly what that feels like. You are encouraged to go at your own pace. If you need to stop, take a breath, or ask a question, our instructors are here to support you.
The hardest part of martial arts is simply walking through the front door. Once you are here, you are part of the community. We look forward to seeing you on the mats!
